The volcano has been active since the 1960s and has had numerous eruptions since then. The most recent significant eruption occurred in 2010, which caused some damage to nearby towns and caused the park to be temporarily closed. Despite its activity, the Arenal Volcano is considered safe to visit and is closely monitored by the National Seismological Network of Costa Rica.
